Don’t worry, everything is out of control. Yes, yes it is, but fundamentally you don’t have to fret. Pao, still has our best interest at heart… and that’s despite having to take that much needed break from making music. Until March of this year, when he announced his latest project aptly called The Conspiracy Tapes, along with a seven track cassette EP which will be released under spareorgan.
As you would expect with the sentiment for our generation’s sense of impending doom, a thread of apprehension, unease and dread looms in the spaces, buzzing on the fringes like a migraine with aura.
The opening track “There’s No I in Isolation” canalises you, puts you in the zone and projects you into a narrow sliver of light at the end of a tunnel, with sounds akin to slipping on a bike pedal which glitch and pock mark the walls as you pass. This is the beginning to a dissonant yet hopeful album, one which conveys a message to abandon your fears and accept that you have no control.
Stepping into the light at the end of the tunnel, a child's voice reminds us to allay our fears and the album journeys through tight complex trip hop beats and higher frequency domains with lush chords, droning sounds from a sitar, swelling pads and a merriment of sampled household appliances. Set the cycle to spin out.
With influences ranging from Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Portishead, Boards of Canada, Autechre and most Hotpoint white goods, The Conspiracy Tapes' album is the perfect soundtrack to our apocalypse, one could even clap as we head into the singularity because we’ve heard all about the end, the end is nigh, the end has been soundtracked and remember; don’t worry, everything is out of control and it’s wonderful.
